August 27, 2018 Dear Parents-Thanks for coming to Curriculum Night… I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed meeting you all. Hard to believe one-third of the grading period is over already. Thanks for working hard on all of the good habits. This week was definitely an improvement from the previous two. I think the biggest improvement has been working independently. In the morning, students have been coming in quietly and grabbing a book, and settling in for a good 20 minutes. Also, they have improved in cleaning up and making transitions quicker. The biggest habit we need to continue to work on is following directions. Overall, a great start…I am very encouraged!! On a sadder note, I had to miss this last Friday and Monday due to my father’s funeral service in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. It was a celebration as he lived a long happy life, (91) and was a great father!! DATES TO REMEMBER Wednesday, Aug. 29 Picture Day Monday, September 3 No School, Labor Day Book Fair Preview - 9/4-8 Buying –9/10-14 Grammar: We will be working on interjecting dialogue using quotations marks and commas into their writing. Also, we will be teaching the students how to recognize Fragments, Run-On’s, in their pieces, while writing complete and compound sentences using a conjunction correctly. Writing: We will continue to work our way through the components of writing a good narrative. We have also started working on notes for our narratives and composing a good beginning paragraph. Our final goal this grading period is to write a great 5 paragraph narrative. We will eventually type these up and post on their Google Classroom account. Reading: We have been working on and will continue to making connections, drawing inferences, determining main idea and summarizing. Also this week, we will learn about themes. A theme is not a word, it is a sentence. You don’t have to agree with the theme to identify it. Theme: Life lesson, meaning, moral, or message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work. In other words… Theme is what the story teaches readers. Examples: Money can’t buy happiness. Don’t judge people based on the surface. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Treat others the way you want to be treated It is better to die free than live under tyranny. **Please talk about themes at the dinner table. Your child will love to share the theme of their favorite books or movies. Classroom needs: Thanks to those who have brought in hard candy…the kids love it! Blessings! Mr. Bullard Sunday, August 19, 2018 Dear Parents-Hard to believe we have covered 2 weeks of school already. We are working hard on all of the above good habits. Please ask your child which of these they are doing well and which they may need to work on. Important Dates: Curriculum Night: Tuesday, August 21, 6:30 pm Labor Day (Student/Teacher Holiday): Monday, September 3 Grammar: We are continuing to work on using correct punctuation, capitalization, and proofreading their writing. We will also be writing complete and compound sentences using a conjunction correctly. We have been having fun reviewing with Kahoots. Writing: We will be digging into the narrative genre. We will pick topics, prewriting an introduction, and actually writing an introduction using our notes. This next week we will practice and polish up our introductions and practice techniques for writing a good narrative. Reading: We have been writing reader’s response for what we are reading. We have also been working on and will continue making connections, drawing inferences, determining main idea and summarizing. Classroom needs: None at this time Things to do 1. Please fill out the parent survey; I have many more to do this. Have a spectacular week and see you Tuesday. Mr. Bullard 4th Grade Teacher Dolvin Elementary [email protected] www.bullard5.weebly.com Follow me on Twitter @dolvinbullard August 12, 2018 We had an awesome first week of school. I'm so excited to have each of your children in my class! We are going to have a fantastic year together! This past week our class spent time getting to know each other and our class expectations. We talked about Dolvin's PBIS school wide expectations and how to behave throughout the school. We also shared our hopes and dreams for the year. Feel free to ask your child about our 5 class rules and the hand motions to go with them. Over the next couple of weeks I will be introducing your child to many online resources. We will be setting up most accounts in class. However, feel free to check the blog for any new resources we may setup. This week students joined our Google Classroom for Reading and Language Arts. This will be where students are turning in most of their assignments. In Google Classroom your child's username is their student number with @fcsgaonline.org at the end. Their password is their birthday in 8 numbers. If your child is new to Dolvin it may take a few weeks to get them setup but we are working on it. When creating a username and password it will make it easiest for your child if you always use their student number as their username and their password either be their birthdate or something else simple that they will always know. However, if you want to help your child remember their logins there is a place in the front of the agenda where students can be writing this information. Topics:
