August 27, 2018 Dear Parents-Thanks for coming to Curriculum Night… I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed meeting you all. Hard to believe one-third of the grading period is over already. Thanks for working hard on all of the good habits. This week was definitely an improvement from the previous two. I think the biggest improvement has been working independently. In the morning, students have been coming in quietly and grabbing a book, and settling in for a good 20 minutes. Also, they have improved in cleaning up and making transitions quicker. The biggest habit we need to continue to work on is following directions. Overall, a great start…I am very encouraged!! On a sadder note, I had to miss this last Friday and Monday due to my father’s funeral service in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. It was a celebration as he lived a long happy life, (91) and was a great father!! DATES TO REMEMBER Wednesday, Aug. 29 Picture Day Monday, September 3 No School, Labor Day Book Fair Preview - 9/4-8 Buying –9/10-14 Grammar: We will be working on interjecting dialogue using quotations marks and commas into their writing. Also, we will be teaching the students how to recognize Fragments, Run-On’s, in their pieces, while writing complete and compound sentences using a conjunction correctly. Writing: We will continue to work our way through the components of writing a good narrative. We have also started working on notes for our narratives and composing a good beginning paragraph. Our final goal this grading period is to write a great 5 paragraph narrative. We will eventually type these up and post on their Google Classroom account. Reading: We have been working on and will continue to making connections, drawing inferences, determining main idea and summarizing. Also this week, we will learn about themes. A theme is not a word, it is a sentence. You don’t have to agree with the theme to identify it. Theme: Life lesson, meaning, moral, or message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work. In other words… Theme is what the story teaches readers. Examples: Money can’t buy happiness. Don’t judge people based on the surface. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Treat others the way you want to be treated It is better to die free than live under tyranny. **Please talk about themes at the dinner table. Your child will love to share the theme of their favorite books or movies. Classroom needs: Thanks to those who have brought in hard candy…the kids love it!
