September 23, 2018 Dear Parents, I can't believe we are already moving into week 8! This year is flying by! Next Week: Reading: We will review skills from the past 5 weeks and plan on giving a quiz on story elements, theme, and context clues mid-week. The test, which will be next week, will cover text evidence, summarizing, main idea, theme, inferencing, making connections (text to text, text to self, and text to world), and story elements. Writing: The students have been finishing their final copies of their 1st personal narrative. They all did so great! I have been trying to conference with each one before their final essay. This week, students will write another personal narrative focusing on a new small moment. Monday will be used for prewriting and the start of drafting. Wednesday and Thursday, they will be drafting and begin editing, and revising. Friday and next Monday, they will be typing their final copies on Google Classroom. Grammar: We have learned about compound sentences, coordinating conjunctions, fragments, subject and predicates, context clues, and will be covering this week the use of reference tools i.e. dictionaries and thesaurus. We will have a test on these before the end of the grading period. **For notes to review, please go to my website, then “Student” tab, then “Reading”, “Writing”, or “Grammar” tab. If you would like to have your child buy books, then please make sure to send money with your child. The book fair has many of the children’s book award books to buy. Also, book club books can be purchased at the book fair if your child doesn’t have theirs yet. This last week, sign and return papers were sent out. Please sign and return these asap. Students now have begun using Flocabulary, and BrainPop for both classwork assignments and learning videos to review concepts taught in class. The Flocabulary and BrainPop assignments should be completed in class so don’t worry about doing them for homework. However, students can feel free to watch the videos and do any of the other activities at home for fun if they want! Quizzes, essays, and tests will be assigned on Google Classroom. Please don’t worry if you are having any trouble getting on these to view, we will get there. Grades will NOT be impacted if there are any troubles. I have now invited all parents to Google Classroom, so you should have access. Also, students are beginning to post to Seesaw and I will connect parents to that asap. Feel free to give them feedback on their posts. The posts will become more frequent as we begin rotations. J Topics:
