Friday is our Love for Reading Day where we will have all kinds of reading activities for the students. *Friday was our field trip to Johns Creek HS to watch a drama. It was fabulous!! David Bullard Dolvin Elementary School [email protected] http://bullard5.weebly.com November 04, 2019 Weekly updates: --No school Tuesday, November 5 --Field Trip November 15 from 9:30-11:30 Reading: We will continue reading our chapter books, which the students are really enjoying! When students finish a book, they are required to do a book review. This helps them work on summarizing, stating the conflict, describing the main character with characteristics and evidence to back it up, setting, and whether or not they would recommend the book and why. We will also be working on details supporting the main idea and summarizing with power points, Kahoots, Brainpop, and Nearpods with a Quiz this Wednesday and aTest on this and text structures Friday. Look for review practice packets in their big binders in the Reading tab. Writing: This week we will continue to build our informational essays and review the expectations and specific elements of a good essay. Students will review a checklist for these to proofread before handing in for a test grade. Some students are almost reading to type them up on Google classroom. These will be due this Friday. Next week, students will go to the lab and do a Write Score Informational Essay for a test grade. This will take 2 days and will be graded by the Write Score Agency. Grammar: Students nailed the quiz using commas in compound sentences. Way to go!!!! Look for notes and review sheets in students’ binder in the ELA tab. Writing: Last week, students learned how to write an introduction and began writing their own, and this week they will learn how to write conclusions to their paper. Socktober Kick Off! Dolvin Dolphins, we are collecting new socks this year for those in need. Last year we collected an overwhelming number of socks that went to the Gateway Center in Atlanta (homeless shelter) and the Foster Care Support Foundation in Roswell and they were so appreciative. This year we would like to collect just as many and maybe more!! We will be collecting NEW socks from October 7 through October 25. Please send in children’s sizes as well as adult sizes. Remember…Every pair helps those in need!! (Last year Mr. Bullard’s class collected the most in the whole school!! Would love to repeat as Mrs. Bice and Mrs. Webster’s classes are wanting to dethrone us!) You can buy socks at Aldis or the Dollar Store for a reasonable price. Upcoming Week: October Mindset: We Are Connected Reading: This week we will be working on our rotations and on book clubs. Students have a choice book in class along with their book club book. Read, read, read!!! That’s how we get better at reading! Also, working on text features and structures. Please feel free to have your child do 2-3 nights on I-Ready for 20-30 minutes for great reading skills, covering all 4th grade concepts and standards. Writing: Students have begun learning about informational essays and will choose a topic this week. Grammar: We will work on dictionary and thesaurus skills. *** From now on, I will ask students to keep all worksheets and other notes and review papers in their big binders (reading and lang. sections) to review for quizzes and tests.
